The Business Development Office brought together Bob Loucks of TCI Stamps and Daniel Ashlock a Professor of Mathematics at University of Guelph to work on a company specific problem. This is a collaboration in-progress and being nurtured to result in new developments for TCI. The session is intended to give SMEs and University researchers a practical example of how this kind of collaboration can be conceived and developed to the benefits of both parties.

Bob Loucks is currently Principal, President and CTO for TCI Stamps and SMARTypeset Solutions Inc., Guelph Ontario. Bob focuses on strategic product and market development through implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies. He is the Co-inventor of  US 7,873,548  process patent for customization of stamps and marking devices. In a prior life held various senior I.T. systems & management positions during 70's & 80's with Kimberley Clark Canada and Fram Corporation  5 OEM divisions. During 1982 through 1985 held the position of Information Systems Consultant reporting to the Board of Directors of Fram.

Daniel Ashlock is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Guelph with a doctorate in mathematics from Caltech.  He holds his department's Chair in Bioinformatics and has over 150 scientific publications in areas including bioinformatics, ecoinformatics, computational intelligence, machine learning, thermal systems, automatic content creation for video games, and evolved art.  His past industrial collaborations include the Proctor and Gamble, Pioneer HiBred, Rockwell, and John Deer corporations and he has held grants with Canada's National Science and Engineering Research Council, the American National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Department of Agriculture.  His primary research area is solving other people's problems and finding interesting mathematics along the way.

Haridoss Sarma is with the Business Development Office at the University of Guelph, engaged in Technology Transfer and Industry Liaison activities. Prior to coming to the U of G, he has worked in the plastics industry for more than 15 years working on several University collaborative projects; he has also spent 3-4 years as a consultant to the chemical and electrical industry and has served as SR&ED technical reviewer.
